Evaluation..
- The normal conventions of a magazine are, they have a title that is relevant to the type of magazine that they are making, a good cover line to attract there target audience, to advertise competitions that will be inside, and show other things that will be inside to get the target audiences attention. The main story is normally something that links with the topic of the magazine. In my magazine I have followed the normal conventions, but I have decided from my textual analysis of front covers, and looking at other magazines that I have read, that I didn’t want my front cover as busy and clustered as others. I think that my pictures and the content on the front of my magazine are strong enough and that I don’t need to have too much going on. I think that sometimes when you have too much going on your front cover, some people including me think that it too messy, which could lead to poor layout inside the magazine. A contents page would normally include, what is going to be on every page, giving the title of that page and how long it goes on for, also it has a letter from the editor, which is saying what this weeks magazine has got in it, and what next weeks issue, the editors letter isn’t normally that long, but it is long enough to just briefly explain. Some times some magazines, give you a picture of what is going to be on a page and put a page number to it, instead of writing out a full contents list. It also includes the name of the magazine; this is to allow the pages to have reference to the magazines front cover. It also includes a picture of the front cover, this will be because. And finally it has a picture of the main story line, this is to show more of an incite to what the main story is about. In my magazine I have followed the normal conventions to an extent. I have decided, just like my front cover, I didn’t want my contents page too busy. I think that as long as my contents has what is going to be inside the rest of the magazine, gives you a letter from the editor and a few pictures, that is sufficient. As long as you lay it out, so the majority of the surface area on the page is filled.
I think that my magazine compared to “Top of the Pops” magazine is less cluttered, I would find this more appealing to buy if I was looking to buy one in a store. The two magazines don’t really have much differences, except the colour schemes, and the way things are laid out. My magazine has very bright colours, that stand out, where as, “Top of the Tops” has got very light colours.
How does your media product represent a particular social group?
- My Music Magazine is aimed at teenagers, giving teenage problems with life, music, fashion etc. My main story is about 3 teenage girls becoming famous, this should show the teenagers who read this that anything can happen as long as they keep their eye on the dream, because of my main story there is a lot of pictures of young girls, whether it is them ready to record their new single to going out on the town. The other smaller stories that I have used are based at teenagers too, like “The Low Down On Chlamydia” this is because the age I have targeted my magazine at is 14-18 year old girls. I have used more text rather than images, this is because I believe that the target audience I have aimed my magazine at are capable of reading short phrases on the front of my magazine. So I have used more text than images, even though the images I have used, to relate to the text. I have used a phrase that will relate to the teenagers.
The majority of teenagers now download their music off the internet to burn to CD’s instead of buying CD’s, it is easier to download them, because you can select which songs you would want on your CD, so I have advertised the free downloading off iTunes as a competition by using a Strapline, this should get more people to buy the magazine, which are in my target audience.
I have also used the “UK’s Top 40” to try and lure my target audience in. I have represented teenagers very stereotypically, I know I have done this because I have classed them all as one, by the way they dress, what sort of music they are into, what fashion they are most likely to wear or like.
What Kind of Media institution might distribute your Media product and why?
- The BBC already publish magazines like mine, aimed at around the same age group and the content of the magazines would be nearly the same as mine. The BBC’s “Top of the Pops” would be my rival magazine, because of all the reasons above. I think that the institution that is most likely to distribute my magazine is “Bauer”, this is because they already have music magazines out, but in a different genre to mine, so they have a gap in the market for my magazine. This could allow my magazine to become more popular, because people might only buy a magazine because of where it is instituted. However, it might be better to institute it with another company that doesn’t have anything to do with music magazines. That way it might make it easier for my magazine to be bought, “Natmags” is based on Women’s Lifestyle magazines. They might not want my magazine because it isn’t as glossy as the magazines they do. But, if they did want my magazine, they would have a gap in the market, it would all depend on whether “Natmags” would want a magazine that is based on music, but does have the features of women’s lifestyle.
Who would be the audience for your Media Product?
- My media product would be based at young girl teenagers, aged between 14 and 18years. This is shown by the colours and language of my magazine, and what it advertises. The magazine can also be read by other people that are interested in RnB music. My readers will also be interested in fashion, and gossip.
How did you attract/address your audience?
- To attract my audience I have used; a range of girly colours, mainly pinks, but including purple and black. This would attracted a young teenage girls eye, and they would want to buy it. I have also used a large picture as my main picture on my front cover, to make the audience see the new girl band, and what the main story of the magazine would be about. I have also used bold text ranging in my colour scheme, to make my coverlines stand out, they are short and snappy and explain basically what is in the magazine. I put the competition strapline right at the top of the magazine, so when the magazines are all in their stands the only thing the reader will be able to see is the top bit, and mine says “COMPETITION INSED: WIN 1000 ITUNES DOWNLOAD”. This would attract the audience to look at this, and if they wanted a chance, they would buy it to try and win.
What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
- While I have been creating my magazine I have used a range of technologies. To begin with I used a “blog”, I have never used a blog before, but now I know how to upload text and images. I now know my way around the blog website, and will know how to use it if I need to use it in the future. I have based all of my designs on “publisher”, this is where I have created my front cover, contents page and double page spread. I have also used “GIMP”. Gimp has helped me to make my photos more professional, I used a smudge tool to get rid of all the dirty marks, and plugs, this just added the finishing touches to my finished products. The photos which i took myself, I used a professional camera. I learnt how to put the camera onto a timer which would allow the models get into position ready for the camera to take the pictures. While we was taking the photos we also used proper lights, three of them, this was to create that “professional look”.
